Apologies for the slight gap in posts, I had a really busy week and it just got on top of me a little. If you read my blog at all, you will know that coconut is one of my favourite fragrances in the world. I am obsessed with any shampoo, body spray etc. that has even the faintest hint of a coconut smell. In reality, I am also a huge fan of anything with a coconutty taste.
A year or so ago, every celebrity gossip magazine was raving about coconut water – the celebs were lapping it up and it was said to be very good for you. It wasn’t the stars’ influence but rather the idea of a coconut drink that piqued my interest and I tried it for myself. I loved it and would pick it up from time to time.
Last week, I received an email from the lovely people at Vita Coco telling me all of the benefits of coconut water in great detail and to say I was floored would be an understatement. I couldn’t believe how it fared against other drinks. I don’t want this post to sound like a regurgitated press release or to bore you with facts and figures but I honestly found this so interesting.
Vita Coco’s coconut water is made up of only one ingredient – fresh coconut water and contains no colourings, preservatives or flavourings. It is full of a naturally occurring potassium and essential electrolytes. This is one of the most hydrating things you can drink and if you are hydrated on the inside, it will help to keep your skin hydrated on the outside too.
It has 52.8% less sugar per 100ml than a leading brand in fizzy drinks, 50.9% less than a leading brand in tradition juices, 37.5% less than a leading brand in sports drinks and – this is the scary one – 63.5% less than a leading brand in SMOOTHIES. I don’t know about you but if I am trying to eat healthier or watch my weight, I would always imagine a smoothie as the healthy option so statistics like that really freak me out. Vita Coco’s coconut water also contains 73.5% fewer calories than that smoothie brand and that is a hell of a lot!
Following on from my posts about the Nupo diet, I am definitely going to try to choose coconut water over any other drinks in my quest to stay healthy. The best part is that I love the taste and it will still feel like a nice treat. The thing I find about trying to drink regular water is that it tastes so boring and I long for something sweet. Vita Coco is available in five flavours; 100% Natural Coconut Water, Coconut Water with Pineapple, Coconut Water with Orange, Coconut Water with Acai & Pomegranate and Coconut Water with Peach & Mango. The flavours are produced by adding fruit puree to keep it natural and are great for those who aren’t fans of plain coconut water – which happens to be my favourite!
It is available in either 330ml cartons (pictured above) from approx. €2 and 1 litre cartons from €4.50. What do you think? Are you a fan of coconut water or are you yet to try it? What is your favourite health drink?
